I’d worked three jobs to get my bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, graduated at the top of my class from the police academy, moved to Chicago, and after gaining experience as a Chicago police officer, applied to and gotten accepted into a prestigious DEA task force. This all-consuming goal had guided my every move leading up to this moment. I just wanted to stay focused because today, my lifelong dream to dismantle the drug organizations that had destroyed my family was a huge step closer to coming true.
I offered a polite smile but said nothing back. “Morning.” His baritone voice rumbled through the space. Eyes that locked on to me as he casually rested his hand on a Gucci gym bag slung over his shoulder. He looked like a model with dark hair and facial stubble, a tall, muscular body and captivating eyes. Overall, Deadly Illusions is a fun and entertaining novel that will leave the reader eagerly waiting for the next installment to see how the characters’ relationships progress.When a gorgeous guy walked into the otherwise empty elevator, I had no idea that in a few weeks, he would kill several men to protect me. Though not particularly thought-provoking, the mystery subplot is interesting and fast-paced, and it provides the perfect foil to set up the interactions between the characters. However, the driving force behind this and the other novels in the series, namely the character relationships, is well-done and will definitely hold the reader’s attention. The dialogue often feels anachronistic, the main characters seem too modern, and imbuing the setting with a genuine historical feel is not Joyce’s forte. Sparks and jealousies fly as Francesca tries to unmask the killer before he strikes again, this time at those she holds dear. Her sleuthing throws her in with her former love interest, police commissioner Rick Bragg, who also just happens to be the half-brother and implacable rival of her fiancé, semi-reformed libertine Calder Hart. The Slasher is murdering poor young Irishwomen in turn-of-the-century New York, and amateur sleuth and wealthy socialite Francesca is determined to find the killer. Deadly Illusions, the latest offering in the Francesca Cahill series, continues Joyce’s penchant for combining mystery with sensual romance.
